In 1885 in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States. The day is a state holiday in most states, it has different names including Washington's Birthday. It is traditionally celebrated on February 22 Washington's actual day of birth. Several states have individual holidays honoring different presidents. Presidents day is now viewed as a day to celebrate all the U.S president.
